Exchanging your Time Share Week

An alluring feature of timeshare ownership is the option to exchange. It enables you to trade your week for a week at another resort. At a different time of the year, and at a different location. Even a different country.

It is a system that can work for the benefit of all as long as owners are realistic. You can’t exchange a winter week at a condominium in Seattle for a high season week at a premiere resort in Hawaii, for example.

Direct Exchange

The simplest way to exchange a timeshare is by direct agreement with another owner. To facilitate this some resorts have bulletin boards, often displayed on their website, where owners can make known available units for exchange. Many of these resorts have multiple locations under their management so a wide range of trade options is available.

Exchange Companies

These Companies (there are two main operators, Resort Condominiums International (RCI) and Interval International (II)) maintain a register where details of timeshare properties for exchange are listed by owners. These listings, often referred to as a “spacebank,” are available to you after you register a property for exchange. You can then use the “credit” of your week’s deposit to obtain a week at an alternative resort. Obviously guidelines apply, but this service provides owners with a great degree of flexibility. Many resort operators have a relationship with either RCI or II so owners can exchange weeks.
